History & Locations

The  existence  of  the  Wellow  Maypole  can  be  traced  as  far  back  as  1856  and  on  the  9th  of  May 1860,  a  new  pole  had  to  be  erected  as  the  old  one  had  been  sawn  down  during  a  drunken  spree  a few  weeks  earlier.

To  commemorate  Queen  Victoria’s  Jubilee  in  1887,  a  new  pole  was  given  by Sir  John  Savile,  which  had  three  cross  pieces  near  its  summit,  painted  spiral  decoration  and  a seat  around  the  base.

In  1923,  Lord  Savile  replaced  the  Jubilee  Maypole.  This  pole  lasted  until 1937  when  it  was  deemed  to  be  unsafe  and  was  cut  down  from  60ft  to  20ft.  In  1949,  this  pole  was finally  chopped  down  for  safety  reasons  and  in  1950  a  new  pole  was  bought  from  Rufford  Estates.

During Victorian times, Sherwood became a tourist attraction, with interest in the ancient ‘greenwood’ fuelled by romantic novels set in medieval times, such as Walter Scotts’ Ivanhoe.

Since then, The Major Oak has become its new name. Due to its national importance, conservation measures to the tree have been carried out continually since 1908.

Today, this world famous oak, at least 800 years old, weighs an estimated 23 tons, its trunk circumference is 33 feet (10m) and its branches spread to over 92 feet (28m).

Maypole Inn Helps Youngsters

With Life and Work Skills

Here at The Maypole we pride ourselves in employing local staff members who are seeking experience in customer service skills and help with growing their confidence ready for future opportunities. Therefore, we train young women and men that are at college or sixth form so they are able to work as part of our waiting team along side the senior and management members of staff. We believe this will help develop their work skills, giving them the independence and an advantage in future life.

We have, Bryony, Beth, Faith and Luke who form the younger waiters in our restaurant, all of which are very professional and eager to start on their bar training! All of which are at college or sixth form

Then we have, Brendan, Abbi and Joe which work in our pot wash. Brendan is starting a placement with us through his school since he is so keen in cooking and helping our chefs in the kitchen… we are hoping to give him an apprenticeship once he finishes school! Abbi loves baking and is currently preparing for her GCSE’s and Joe is very musical, studying music at college in Nottingham.

What People Think

Everything was up to standard and beyond

William - October 2018

Service and staff brilliant and friendly. Room was lovely. Perfect.

Justin - October 2018

The country village was a pleasant place to spend a couple of days. The hotel was a friendly place to stay. Staff were very welcoming and helpful. My ensuite room (located at the rear in motel style) was warm, well presented, comfortable and clean. The Plenty of onsite parking made parking easy and accessible. The restaurant/breakfast room was a nice place to sit and enjoy, as was the bar.
